Uploading a document/file and then linking to it in the content:

  1. It is highly recommended that any documents/files you upload and link to in your content are in Adobe PDF format.  Documents and files from other applications can only be viewed by those website visitors who have that application on their local computer.  Adobe PDF files can be viewed by all visitors by using the free Adobe Reader application.
  2. Convert the document/file you want to upload to PDF - contact your building IT if you need a PDF creator application.
  3. To upload your pdf document to the website for linking, click anywhere within your html editor textbox and select the Image button at the bottom of the text editor box.
  4. A new box will open with the image folders and images available to you.  You should also see a folder with your username (contact the administrator of the website if you do not see your personal folder).
  5. Locate and select your folder, then use the Browse and Upload buttons at the bottom of the box to upload your pdf document.  When the upload is complete, select Cancel in the upper right corner of the editing box.  Although Joomla is a fantastic content management system, it still has some bugs and this is one of them.  It will allow you to upload the pdf document in the Image widget, but does not recognize it in the file structure for inserting...so my instructions include a "go around" solution using another Joomla widget called Linkr.
  6. Type the text in your text box that you would like to have link to your pdf document and then highlight it using your cursor.
  7. Select the Linkr button at the bottom of the text box.  A new editor box will appear.
  8. Select Files from the horizontal Link| menu at the top.
  9. Select the images folder and continue through the directory until you find your personal folder.
  10. Locate your uploaded pdf document and select it.  Confirm the link Text in the drop down fields and select Blank Page for the Page Target field.
  11. Click on Get Link.
  12. Save your changes using the Save button in the upper right corner of the editor and then test your link on the webpage.
